Is there a way to provide a total for a numeric column in a table? It would be great if the was also a dynamic sub-total by group as well.

Sure, that´s possible. Hover over below the row “+ Add new row” right under the column you want the total for. Click on the appearing “Summary” and choose “Sum” from the menu pop up. See screenshots:
